Rabbits in Kenya
Jacky E.L. Foo is from Program Officer, Environment & Sustainable Development for Globetree (www.globetree.org)
Jacky writes
during the last 12 months (since April 2008), I have been working in Kenya on a project about food self-reliance by vulnerable children. Seven rabbit houses were set up and the concept is to sell rabbit meat to the host organizations. Income
made is deposited into micro-loan funds and which children who manage the rabbit houses may benefit one day. Many of them may not go to secondary school and even fewer for higher education. Such rabbit houses provide the skills they may need to start their own rabbit farm when they leave school after Class 8 or Form 4.
Cameroon has caught up with the idea and will hopefully go the launch of “Rabbit Network Cameroon”

Good mature rabbits breeds go for Kshs.5,000.00 and bunnies between 2-3 months go for Kshs.3,000.00.Good breeds is not a guranteed success in this venture, I reccomend you so go through some basic training on rabbit management.I have good breeds contact me.

Prices of rabbits vary and all sellers have the right to set their own prices.
As a buyer and seller myself, my working principle is to help the poor. The Govt breeding center in Ngong sells Flemish giants (March 2009) at 500 ksh (five hundred) for 6 weeks old weaned rabbits. I prefer to use ordinary meat rabbits (fed with greens, not pellets) and sell 3-4 month old ones at 200 ksh (for breeding). My mission is to encourage rabbit keeping in Kenya.

basic requirements to start a commercial rabbit colony farm
(i) 1 acre land
(ii) 10 large sacks of grass per day.
(iii) a local neighbourhood community as a community partner
Optional:
(i) river water source for fish farming
(ii) interests in integrated farming methods

Q: is there a serious demand for rabbit meat in Kenya..
Yes, I believe so… it is just that the demand has not been met because there is no proper supply. So we dont hear about it.
The government is trying to respond to it. see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTuMoosJSQk (21 Sept 2009)
Another major problem is the attitude of overpricing. In the youtube video, you will see that the price there is 250 Ksh per kilo. I am very happy with this because it will encourage the growth of the industry. (beef sells at around the same price in local butcheries).
Many rabbit breeders are targeting at higher prices and wish to see it develop as a “luxury” meat. I wish to see it as meat which the poor and rich could afford.
Let local butcheries sell it for 250 ksh/kg, supermarkets can sell it for 450 Ksh per kilo and restaurants can make their money at 1000 Ksh per plate. All these operations have different overhead costs.
The most damaging issue is when rabbit breeders start to demand high prices for their rabbits and the effect is that local butcheries are unable to sell them. Then rabbit meat will become a luxury meat.

By jacky foo, October 20, 2009 @ 12:46 pm
Q: is it just an overrated enterprise?
Keeping rabbits is not new in Kenya. You ask a grandfather and he will tell you that he had rabbits before. This is backyard rabbit keeping.
There are small commercial rabbit farms. They often cater exclusively for one or two restaurant clients. Commercial feed is often used and this is a limiting factor.
1 kg of pellets costs about 35 Ksh (50USA cents).
Q: is there a rabbit meat industry in Kenya ?
not yet……but it is growing only recently.
Is it “overrated” enterprise ?
yes…if the market is trying to create it as a luxury meat and to be served in 5-star hotels.
No…. because here you have an opportunity to develop a rabbit meat industry. The opportunity is that local butcheries can also sell rabbit meat at 250 Ksh/kg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTuMoosJSQk)

By jacky foo, October 20, 2009 @ 10:37 pm
Q: should we encourage rabbit meat as a “luxury” meat ?
If it means pricing rabbit meat that is beyond the reach of the poor and the middle class, then see two meanings in this.
I would certainly not encourage it.
Why:
because it can be produced at a low cost and certainly not more than cattle, chickens and sheep that are fed with commercial feed.
I dont want to see a new meat industry that is set up to sell at prices that only the rich can pay.

By Fredrick Nyaga, October 26, 2009 @ 4:04 pm
I tend to agree on Jack Foo’s comments on the following:-
Prices of rabbits vary and all sellers have right to set their own prices & local community as a patner in order to meet the supplies but wish to put my points as follows:-
The government rabbitary at Ngong does not meet the demands for rabbits by kenyan farmers. A friend of mine paid his fare from Gigil only to be told there were no rabbits.
I have been to rabbitary myself and there rabbits can not match those of individual farmers and of-course I could not buy just because of their prices. Even dairy cows can range from Kshs.10,000.00-200,000.00 depending on quality and production capacity.
Another issue is the red-tape involved in obtainning the rabbits as they do not produce on their own but rely on local individuals to supply at low prices from kshs.250.00 only for them to sell at kshs.500.00 which is not fare.
Having been to various ASK shows and the last one held at Nairobi I did not find the them (Ngong Rabbitary) on this shows, reason being they did not have any to exhibit or their quality could not meet that of individual farmers.
On basic requirements to start a commercial rabbitary:
1 acre of land- is a dream for many Kenyans especially the youths and to support my view I want to site examples of farmers in Kiambu who on their one acre of land embrace new farming techniques not only keep rabbits but keep dairy cows, goats, sheep, chicken among other livestock and grow crops using green house technology.
10 large sacks of grass- feeding rabbits alone on grass can result to bloating especially where the grass is not properly withered. The basic nutrional diet for rabbits should be composed of dry matter such hay from dried grass, wheat or barley or maize stalks.Mineral salts and adequate clean water. If the is not observed your rabbits we be retarded, or your doe will be cannibalising on its bunnies on birth.
Rabbit meat vs other meat- rabbit meat is white meat that is juicy, sweet, tender and of high nutritional value and comes second to Fish hence its price difference. Jack Broilers goes for Kshs.350.00 per kg and is genetically modified. The Gilgi butchery funded by the World Bank have a membership of over 200 farmers I being one of them and we are negotiating our prices from the current Kshs.350.00 to Kshs.500.00 with the hotels we supply please get in touch we do not meet the demands of 2 tonnes per month. If 1/4 Kg served with potatoes, rice, chapati in these hotels goes for Kshs.1,000.00 why should there be this huge price variations. Jack farmers have become more informed please visit sokosasa.com to see the prices farmers are asking for. Of-course if you buy rabbits at Kshs.250-500 you will not sell at this price to the 5 star hotels in Nairobi or abroad. On marketing Jack you can not serve the entire market. You choose your niche and your price for commodities so depending on your market and the quality of products demanded.
Lastly rabbits are highly prolific and hence weather you will buy them at Kshs.5,000.00 your returns are guaranteed. The China Rabbit King I think he can offer some good advise on rabbit management.

hi, I am happy to see there are guys who have my idea of rearing rabbits. I want to start the business and I live in Kikuyu and I would please want some advice on how to rear them and what they eat. I heard they eat pellets and hay is it true? And which is the best breed for commercial use?

Am Callaghan and interested commercial rabbit rearing. I have enough land and reliable source of food and water in Murang’a. I would also like to join the Gilgil Butchery farmers. Comment on: Fredrick Nyaga
>Even dairy cows can range from
>Kshs.10,000.00-200,000.00 depending on
>quality and production capacity
we cannot compare different breeds of dairy cows since each breed is rated according to the amount of milk produced.
What I am saying that that the Rabbit Breeding unit offered flemish giant at 500 Ksh for 6 week weaned meat rabbits. If someone is selling the same at 1,500 Ksh, that is too much for me. I would prefer to wait for the supply from Ngong and get 3 times the number of rabbits.

are you referring to teh Rabbit Breeding Unit at Ngong ?
what red-tape procedures did you face ?
There is a queue for weaned rabbits since the demand is high because the rabbits are sold at a very low price.
I think they have some 20 breeding does.

yes… hotels will buy at a higher price.
This is what I fear because you then create another luxury meat for the rich….
what about the middle status Kenyans and the poor ? are they to get the left-overs and un-wanted cuts with bones and fat ?
It would be a pity to see that the World Bank project is to feed the rich ?

Rabbits in Ngong is at a Govt Rabbit breeding station. I dont run the centre. I am just introducing this place to people who want to get a fair price for their rabbits.

always call before you go there.
It is not a drop-in shop. The demand for their rabbits is very high since they are sold at a low price … a government service to rabbit breeders.

I am already rearing rabbits for sell at our small farm in eastlands and I must say thats it’s very good and encouragement for more and more people to enter into the rabbit market because it is a very good source of income. I personally can attest to that. I currently have different breeds e.g chinchilla, angolan, calirornia, flemish giants, flusk vendor, or earloops as many peolpe call it, and I must say that it has been a challenge especially on the part of market and getting rabbit breeds from outside. But now things are looking up for us as farmers and, with time, the rabbit market will eventually be the backbone of afribusiness in Kenya and the world. Anybody wishing to get in touch with us can do so through 0720826713 and let’s all make the change that we want to see.

Am impressed. I’ve hard about rabbit rearing but never thought i would get so much info from the net. Market is not the biggest challenge here. We can create a local demand like for chicken and beef.We don’t have to export to make money.Do you really need an acre to keep them????

Hi, just wondering, where’s the market, as much as Jacky foo is keen not to make this a rich man’s delicacy, I’d still encourage farmers join hands and start supplying hotels with rabbit meat, that way the delicacy will in-turn be introduced into homes opening up a larger market.

I bought two does (a french vendor and a dutch) two weeks ago and i kept them together. Somehow, both went on a hunger strike and they both died. one died after one week while the other died five days later. Not that i did not call a vet. He came and checked them but mumbled something citing that he was not so conversant with rabbits. I live in Banana in Kiambu and i would be glad to know a Vet Doc. who could be coversant with these lovely animals.
In addition i have to refill the gap as well as add some chinchillas and flemish giant.

Hi all. Hope this finds you well. My piece of advice to all potential rabbit farmers is that one can not climb a tree from the top. Can you sell maize that is yet to be planted? I highly doubt. The ready market is you and me.
By george, March 1, 2010 @ 5:31 pm
Hi rabbit keepers just thought i check on you see how the issue on rabbit market is going about this i believe that rabbit market is you and me we cannot expect anybody to but for us except we start ourselves.

THE RABBIT HUTCH SHLD BE 2.5FT BY 2by 2 for weaning should be 2by3by2ft the floor should be made of mesh wire then a kuku net of 1/4nch is placed on top of the mesh wire this help the hutch free from dropping n its kept clean .The hutch should also be well ventrited but drought should be avoided .the walls should be made wooden. for more information about rabbit husbandry contact 0728118485

This seems a very lively debate.
Just thought of this information going public and want to do a TV and Radio show on Rabbit rearing. I wish to visit two or three farms which will be the authority for the viewers and listeners. Do you think your farm is fit enough to be a role model or simply put, a demo farm where we can come and shoot this programme.
Thanks alot all you people who have engaged forward gear to kick hunger out of our country. Remember, our initiatives will save this country from hunger but not the government. If they CANNOT afford to buy maize from farmers in Yatta, yet they can afford to import maize from SA, what does this tell you. Corruption.

I can’t believe the sudden interest that my fellow country men/women have shown on rearing of rabbits. I am also very much interested and, infact, I will start the rearing project this month of March 2010. My only worry is how I will determine which rabbit type is best for meat production, and who are the rabbit meat customers. Cheers!
